Re: Special Ammo?

That's pretty funny! First off 7.62x39 was long ago classified as "pistol ammo" by the Buttholes Against Terrific Firearms so there can be no newly manufactured 7.62x39 AP sold to mere civillians. What's even better is that pic isn't even 7.62x39, it's an entirely different cartridge, apparently 5.56x45.

Not that it matters, with it's low velocity and large caliber the 7.62x39 is poorly suited to piercing armor. High velocity small caliber bullets like you get with the 5.56x45 are better for that. 7.62x39 excells in the area of breaking through non-armor intermediate barriers such as concrete block walls, wood, car bodies, heavy brush and the like and still be dangerous to the badguy on the other side, all things a round like 5.56x45 does not cope with as efficiently. You'd be better off with incendiary 7.62x39 if you want a value-added bullet for this cartridge.

It might be best to avoid the 7.62x39 cartridge, particularly if you are anticipating encounters with the paranormal.

It is difficult to find that cartridge in silver.

I suppose you could always cast your own.

Nope, see that little belt around the base of the cartidge? 5.56x45 isnt a belted round.

Re: Special Ammo?

Good eye Big Rob! What the heck is that thing? I'm not very familiar with the belted cartridges but I thought they were generally all like the large caliber hunting magnums. I guess with nothing else in the picture for reference it's kind of hard to tell what size it is.

AboutHadIt, it'd be a lot more funny if it wasn't true.

It doesn't look like the incendiary in action pic at gunbroker is appropriate for the caliber, either, just going by the bushes and trees. It kind of reminds me of a show I was watching on the History Channel with my dad, it was about the development of firearms. The narrator was explaining how arms designers have continually pushed for performance in small arms while showing a WWII stock footage montage. Well, right when he was saying that they first showed a G.I. with an M1 carbine popping off a shot, then they cut to a whole battleship exploding. My dad's says "It looks like they've achieved perfection!" :aetsch:

There's some great stuff on this site. Is it really a good idea to get all that special ammo for when the real firefights go down? I think that I will invest some it it. If I'm ever seiged on my compound it ought to help lift it.

Tracers can help coordinate fire by showing help exactly where that badguy is hiding. Incendiary rounds can deny cover or at least make it very unpleasant to be around, depending on what it is made out of. AP is useful for armored targets or busting through heavy cover. Everything has its place, you just need to match the right tool to the job. You should at least have some tracers, in a special mag for use in directing fire.

Is it necessary to have a tracer as every round? What about every 4th or 5th? I plan on loading specific clips with different types of ammo.

A tracer is a 2 way street - it'll show where your bullet is going, and where it's coming from. If you envision a nightfight with criminals, I'd suggest a gen 2 or 3 nightscope that's properly sighted in.

As Rev said, incendiary, AP, etc, has it's place...consider potential situations and plan accordingly. In a SHTF scenario, you never know what will come your way

Re: Special Ammo?

Will Gen 1 night vision do anything for me? I just know that the cost is very great for night vision stuff.

gunner 11-17-2006 12:44 AM

Re: Special Ammo?

Haven't seen gen 1 but I think it's okay, it's really a matter of clarity, not distance. I think it takes Gen 3+ or 4 to increase viewable distance, but the price escalates exponentially. If you get a gen 1 or 1+, it should serve you well and be a lot of fun when checking out critters in the back yard :^)

REV127 11-17-2006 01:12 AM

Re: Special Ammo?

I would keep my tracers in seperate mag specifically loaded with only tracers so I could select that ammo type when I needed it. My "regular" mags would have some other appropriate general purpose load. I'd do the same with any incendiary or what have you. I would not suggest using tracers in every mag for the reasons Gunner pointed out.

Re: Special Ammo?

Agreed, and keep in mind CB - you're best odds are in a daylight situation. 12k+ thermo and nightvision eq is small change for an enemy with unlimited funds. You want to keep any battles on your terms and on ground that favor you or offer the least disadvantage.
